How to write an academic essay for university admission?

The first thing to know about an academic essay is how it differs from a motivation letter. The main purpose of the motivation letter (Statement of Purpose) is to convey information to the selection committee about you as a person and an academician, to describe your achievements and goals in the future. Simply put, a cover letter is a letter about yourself.

As for the academic essay, this is a letter from myself. It will reveal your skills in thinking, analyzing and arguing in relation to the main idea. Therefore, the approach to writing an essay is very different from a motivation letter, although there are many similarities.

Essay topic

The topic may be predetermined by the university. For example, "Today, is brainstorming a sufficiently effective method for solving problems?" In other cases, the university only sets the direction of reasoning in a specific area: “In your opinion, which school of management has the strongest potential?”. The third option - you choose the main topic for a given subject at your discretion. When making your own choice, remember that it is important to take the topic on which you can most logically explain your position.

Mistakes when choosing an academic essay topic

A common truth. What would you think after reading 6 pages with the argument “man descended from ape”? Of course, if you find revolutionary evidence for the theory of evolution, that's great, but then this is no longer an essay, but a whole scientific work.
Too controversial question. Do not touch on topics that are not accepted to discuss: religion, politics, personal preferences, etc. The point is not that you should show your indifference, but that your opinion may conflict with the opinion of a member of the commission. Even if you are genuinely interested in such questions, put it aside for future research, the introductory essay is not the best place for them.
