7 easy steps to teach you how to write essays

The ability to write an essay consists of several skills. Some can be learned by a first grader. Others are easier to master closer to 10-11 years. Unfortunately, our school does not consider the ability to create important, although a lot of attention is paid to writing all over the world. If a child often writes his own texts on various occasions, then he will not have problems with compositions either. Therefore, first you need freedom and a minimum of requirements. At one time I was amazed by the small compositions of the first graders, whose teacher was the famous Soviet teacher Vasily Sukhomlinsky. For example:

Even a preschooler can create simple texts. Then this experience of free creativity helps not to grind out other people's words, but calmly write your own.

A technique that helps even the most inexperienced write the first essays. Have the child, on his own or with your help, find words that relate to the proposed topic, and write them out in three columns: nouns, verbs and adjectives.

You need to try to imagine the whole picture in detail. The more words you choose, the more colorful the story will be and the easier it will be to compose it. This technique is also used in textbooks, but, unfortunately, too rarely.

We can go further: make a fantastic list of words that do not match at all, and then try to write a folding or ridiculous story in which we use all of these words.

School teaches you to write an essay plan. But often the child writes plans, but he does not understand why they are needed. In fact, this is a plan for presenting thoughts. To do this, you first need to come up with these thoughts (or at least take ready-made ones), and then arrange them in order and prove them with the help of quotes.

To learn how to come up with thoughts, you can talk about a book or a topic about which an essay is being written, and write down whatever comes to mind. Asking each other questions. “What do you think, Dubrovsky is vindictive or not?” "To be a robber - is it really romantic?"

In the end, we are left with 2-3 of the most interesting thoughts that can be expressed in the essay. Then we figure out how to move from one thought to another. Here is the plan and ready.

Many people do not understand at all how to talk about a book if they do not tell its plot from beginning to end. Can we do without spoilers? Here are a few points that will help you talk not about the plot, but about what is behind it.

About the context (Then there was serfdom ... We know other similar heroes ...).
About language, style (Energetic chopped phrases ... Verbose lyrical descriptions ...).
About the attitude to the present (Now it is difficult for us to understand ... Now it also happens that ...).
About individual scenes and situations, their meaning for the whole work (A turn in his mind occurs when he sees ...).
About minor characters (The author needs this hero to ...).
About the feelings of the heroes (She is both in love and afraid ...).
About my, finally, feelings (And this good man just pisses me off! I would never make him the main character, because ...).
To prove a point, you need to find the right quote for it. This can be very difficult for our children. To do this, you need to remember on which page and what the characters were talking about. Really read it again ?! Guard!

Of course, an essay is easier to write for someone who is well versed in the text. But this can be taught. For practice, let's draw a plot diagram with page numbers: first kiss - p. 321, explanation - p. 326, duel - p. 332. Now it's much easier to look for evidence for your thoughts.

Gradually, even a sixth grader learns to make small bookmarks, on which he briefly indicates what to look for. The ability to work with arrays of text, quickly looking for seeds of different meanings in them, develops the brain and is especially necessary in the era of Google.

Maybe this is the hardest part, the hardest thing to teach. Children have different relationships with language and text. For some, writing is naturally easy. Some people have difficulty expressing their thoughts.

Practice and a good editor are key. And practice is possible, again, if the child has the opportunity to write essays not only "on literature" (the program of this subject is often far from the interests of a teenager), but also about what really worries him.e
